Communications Officer
1. Background

The Centre for Social Planning and Administrative Development (CESPAD) is a Kenyan non-governmental
organization (NGO) specializing in integrated water resources management (IWRM), sanitation and
hygiene (WASH), environmental conservation, agriculture, and poverty analysis. CESPAD focuses on
capacity development, applied research to inform policy, community empowerment, and advisory services.
CESPAD works with grassroots communities—particularly marginalized groups such as women, youth, and
persons with disabilities—as well as civil society organizations, government agencies, private sector actors,
and development partners. The organization supports institutional capacity strengthening, participatory
policy development, climate resilience, food and water security, conflict management, gender
mainstreaming, and good environmental governance.
Over the past decade, CESPAD has implemented water governance and WASH-related programs
including:

  • Promoting IWRM in Kenya Program
  •  Promoting Good Governance in and Through WRUAs Program
  • Watershed Empowering Citizens Program
  • Water Governance Support Programme II (WGSP II)
  • Enhancing Kenya Water Integrity Partnership Program.

These initiatives advance Kenya’s Vision 2030 and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development
Goals (SDGs), particularly SDGs 1, 6, 10, 13, and 16.

2. Objective of the Assignment

The Communications Officer will play a key role in enhancing CESPAD’s digital presence through
strategic website management, engaging social media campaigns, and compelling storytelling across
digital platforms. The officer will ensure that all digital communication materials reflect CESPAD’s brand
values, mission, and strategic objectives with the overall goal of increasing CESPAD’s digital outreach,
advocacy impact, and stakeholder engagement.

3. Scope of Work and Responsibilities

A. Website Management

  • Lead the design and implementation of the website content strategy.
  •  Regularly update the site with relevant articles, updates, reports, and stories aligned to CESPAD’s
    mission.
  • Ensure optimal user experience, functionality, and basic SEO integration.
  • Coordinate with program teams to gather content and ensure accuracy and timeliness.

B. Social Media Management

  • Develop and implement a content calendar and platform-specific strategies (LinkedIn, X,
    Facebook, Instagram, YouTube).
  • Create and curate engaging digital content, including graphics, posts, and short videos.
  • Respond to messages and comments in a timely, professional manner.
  • Monitor analytics and generate monthly reports with actionable insights.

C. Content Creation and Storytelling

  •  Produce high-quality written content, including blog posts, success stories, project updates, and
    donor reports.
  •  Collect and manage multimedia assets (photos, videos) from field activities.
  •  Edit and proofread materials to ensure consistency and professionalism.

CI. Communications Support and Innovation

  • Provide communications support across all CESPAD projects.
  • Propose new ideas and innovations to enhance organizational visibility.
  •  Support documentation and dissemination of program results and knowledge products.

CII. Required Qualifications and Experience

 

  • Bachelors degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Digital Media, or a related field.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a communications role focused on digital platforms.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Experience with website CMS (e.g., WordPress) and social media management tools.
  •  Basic graphic design skills (e.g., Canva, Adobe Suite) and familiarity with video editing tools.
  • Knowledge of environmental, water, or NGO sectors is highly desirable.
  • Experience working on donor-funded projects is an added advantage.
  •  Strong organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills.

CIII. Duration
This is a short-term assignment for an initial period of six (6) months, with the possibility of extension based
on performance and funding availability.

CIV. Location:

The position is based in Nairobi, with occasional travel to field locations as needed.

All materials, data, and content created under this assignment shall remain the sole property of CESPAD
and shall not be shared or used elsewhere without written authorization.
